Petrotechnics & University of Trinidad and Tobago Celebrate the First Graduating Candidates from Integral Hazard Awareness Courses

HOUSTON, 29 October 2013 /PRNewswire/ – Following the successful launch of the strategic partnership between Petrotechnics and the University of Trinidad & Tobago (UTT) in late 2012, the partnership has successfully certified its first graduates in the Hazard Identification and Task Risk Assessment courses. The courses were designed to help develop locally supported high quality critical hazard awareness and risk assessment capabilities for the oil and gas workforce in the region.

The initiative prompted by bp Trinidad and Tobago recognised the need for locally provided consistent and ongoing training for its offshore workers as well as to develop local capability in this space. Bp’s strong ongoing connection to both Petrotechnics and UTT offered a powerful self-sustaining business model using Petrotechnics’ world renowned training consultants to deliver its unparalleled ‘train the trainer’ courses within a highly respected academic institution.

After a year, this ground-breaking programme has produced the first series of fully certified trainers. The first crop of graduates have been assessed in a broad range of Control of Work competencies including Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HITRA) and Sentinel PRO® Level 1 and 2 training courses.

Petrotechnics’ senior training consultant, Mike Bowie, spent over a week supervising the final assessments for the candidates. To make sure that the programme produced more than conceptual understanding, the candidates were put through intensive and comprehensive observation of their learning and technical application by real life bp delegates.

Following the successful field assessment as part of this certification of these first candidates, they are now able to provide hazard awareness and CoW training for local workers without supervision.

Speaking of the partnership and progress, Iain Mackay, Executive Vice President of Petrotechnics stated “It’s a major milestone for all parties, Petrotechnics, bp , the University and most of all for the successful candidates. Petrotechnics has always been a firm believer in empowering individuals and local communities. Especially when it comes to ensuring safer, more effective risk management in our industry. With our track record of delivering safety education and industry leading work management software solutions including our new Operational Performance & Predictive Risk platform, Proscient; the support of UTT and the growth of the local industry cultivating self sustaining local safety capabilities was the most logical and rewarding thing to do. We hope these first few candidates will be the start of a significant wave of local safety talent within the region. ”

Zameer Mohammed, Assistant Vice President of the UTT’s Profession Education Unit commented on the successful engagement among the stakeholders: “The initiative was one of the better examples of an entrepreneurial engagement among industry, academia, and community. This triple helix engagement was an approach consistent with the University’s mission. The result of this inevitably can produce a cadre of Trinidad and Tobago nationals fully equipped with the competency set to sustain the requirements of industry.”

Petrotechnics and UTT have plans to build in the partnership, adding annual re-accreditation and expanding the coverage of the courses to include Isolations Management and Safety Leadership.

West Indies Opening Batsman Kieran Powell Launches Cricket Star Search In Collaboration With Sri Lankan Icon Muttiah Muralidaran’s Foundation Of Goodness Charity

CaribPR Wire, LONDON, England, Sun. Oct. 13, 2013: Dashing West Indies opening batsman, Kieran Powell, is set to launch a cricket star search in collaboration with global sporting icon Muttiah Muralidaran’s internationally acclaimed charity, the Foundation of Goodness, in Seenigama, Sri Lanka, this week.

Powell, who achieved victory as Captain of the West Indies A team in the recently completed One-Day international series against India A,  said he is thrilled to be launching such a significant and worthy initiative to assist promising youth cricketers from rural regions, as part of the young star’s ‘Kieran Powell Academy.’

“The aim of the initiative is to discover and expose regional youth cricketing talent with the winning participants being awarded high-level Scholarship Programmes to train under Murali’s Foundation of Goodness,” explained Powell. “Ten Scholarships are up for grabs and it is an honor for me to work in collaboration with the Foundation, which played an enormous role in assisting and nourishing the lives of victims of the 2004 Sri Lankan Tsunami, and has since created an incredible sustainable community model designed to inspire and empower disadvantaged communities across the world. They are indeed an incredible organization and I hope to emulate their ethos and values, in steering my own Academy to the same heights of achievement.”

The initiative will consist of Kieran Powell themed ‘Star Search Days,’ where outstanding young cricketing talent will be selected to compete for prized Scholarship Programmes, awarding the winners’ an intense cricket training, chance-of-a-lifetime opportunity, at the Seenigama Sports Academy, the sporting arm of the Foundation.

Foundation of Goodness Founder and trustee, Kushil Gunasekera, praised the desire of 23-year-old Powell, who was recently named West Indies Cricket Board’s Emerging Player of the Year, to make such a remarkable contribution to those less privileged across the world.

“We have had hundreds of international personalities, including some of the world’s most high profile and most respected cricketers, collaborate with our organization and our cause over the years,” commented Gunasekera. “However, to have such a yearning and determination at such a young age, to develop the talent of others less fortunate than himself – several of whom lost their livelihoods and families in the 2004 Tsunami and would otherwise never get such an opportunity – is a truly notable trait in this young man, and it is a testament to how far he will go not just as an exceptionally talented batsman but as an ambassador for West Indies Cricket and for sport by and large.”

Powell, who had carefully crafted the initiative with his Manager Emma Everett, over the past several months as part of his Academy launch, is excited that the initiative is ready to be unveiled, and paid tribute to sponsors and a dedicated team in Sri Lanka who helped make his wish a reality.

“We have had some amazing commitment and support from a wonderful team of individuals out there, and I am looking forward to personally thanking them all and appreciating the splendor of Sri Lanka, this being my first visit out there,” he said.

Powell will join the West Indies senior team in a few days’ time to take on India once again, and said he is extremely pleased to be back in the squad after finger surgery kept him out of contention during the team’s most recent tours, earlier in the year.

“The India tour will be an especially poignant one, as it will be the great Sachin’s farewell to cricket and I am grateful I will be a part of such a historical occasion. He is what every cricketer aspires to be,” said the powerful left-handed batsman, who himself has been strongly earmarked for West Indies leadership, according to recent media reports, re-affirmed by his award for Emerging Player of the Year, in July this year.

The Kieran Powell Cricket Star Search kicks off on Monday 14th October at the Seenigama Surrey Oval in Sri Lanka, with the Scholarship Winners’ Award ceremony due to take place later this week.

The Hard Beat Communications executive, along with Guyanese Valence Williams and Menes De Griot were the lone Caribbean nationals joining the New York Immigration Coalition organized rally in Brooklyn, NY, as they put the spotlight on the voiceless Caribbeans who are undocumented and desperate for immigration reform yet remain in the shadows.

Carrying a sign that read simply: “Caribbeans Too Need Immigration Reform,” Persaud, founder of CaribPR Wire, News Americas Now and Invest Caribbean Now, who has penned her 46th open letter to President Obama in her weekly column in the New York Amsterdam News calling for immigration reform now, got the thumbs up from Chirlane McCray, the wife of New York City mayoral front-runner, Bill de Blasio, whose roots extend to the Caribbean, as she proudly carried her sign around Cadman Plaza, Brooklyn, NY.

Then along with De Griot on the drum and Williams on the cowbells, Persaud marched over the Brooklyn Bridge Saturday afternoon along with thousands of mainly Latino advocates to send a message to President Obama and the U.S. Congress that passage of comprehensive reform reform was an issue  just as important as the debt ceiling and the re-opening of the government.

“The fact the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service and consuls worldwide are largely open because of immigrants fees and the government shutdown has not affected them tells why the Congress needs to pass CIR now,” Persaud said.

Though they were only three, the small Caribbean contingent stole the show with their rhythm and sent a clear message that the Caribbean was in the house and also needed immigration reform.

“It’s beyond incomprehensible that some three million Caribbean people can party each year down Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, New York but only three of us can show up to make our voices heard for something that is important to thousands in our community,” said Persaud.

The march by tens of thousands nationally took place on the 100th day anniversary since the passage of the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act in the Senate. The Republican controlled House has refused to bring the measure to a vote, insisting they will address the hot button issue through smaller bills only but has yet to bring any bills to the House floor.

The rally was held under the theme, “National Day of Immigrant Dignity and Respect,” and came just days after House Democrats introduced their own immigration bill in the U.S. House of Representatives, calling too for immigration reform and a path to citizenship for 11 plus million undocumented immigrants in the United States.
